The five states with the fastest rising home sales in the third quarter of 2009 registered increases ranging between 20% and 43%, according to quarterly data released on November 10 by the National Association of Realtors (NAR).
North Dakota registered the largest by far increase in home sales in Q3 2009, as the seasonally adjusted annual rate climbed 42.3%. Note that this was the second quarterly increase in a row, as home sales in Q2 increased as well by 8.3%.
Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, District of Columbia and
Oregon (in ranking order), with quarterly home sales increases ranging between 20.5% and 26.5%, complete the list of the top five states with the fastest rising home sales in the third quarter of 2009.

The larger states of California, New York and Texas registered strong increases as well. Home sales in California posted a quarterly increase of 10.2% following an 8.9% drop in the second quarter of 2009.

Home sales in New York posted a quarterly increase of 8.2% following a 22.3% increase in the second quarter of 2009, while home sales in Texas posted a quarterly increase of 9.8% following a 2.9% increase in the second quarter.
It should be noted that only five US states registered declining home sales in Q3 2009. Minnesota was by far the worst performing state as home sales declined by 15.7%. Home sales in Q3 2009 declined also in Alaska, Nevada, Idaho and Arizona by 7.8%, 2.0%, 1.5% and 0.5%, respectively.
