Rates for fixed-rate mortgages are predicted to rise to 5.36% in 2010, according to the October 2009 forecast issued by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB).
In particular, the forecast predicts that the average Freddie Mac commitment rate for fixed-rate mortgages will increase from 5.09% in 2009 to 5.36% in 2010. According to the NAHB forecast, the average Freddie Mac commitment rate for fixed-rate mortgages will continue climbing in 2011 and reach 5.79%.
The average Freddie Mac commitment rate for adjustable rate mortgages (ARMs) is also predicted to rise from 4.77% in 2009 to 4.89% in 2010. This will still compare favorably with the rates that prevailed in 2008 and 2007, which averaged 5.18% and 5.56%, respectively.
NAHB predicts that the average Freddie Mac commitment rate for adjustable rate mortgages (ARMs) will continue climbing in 2011 and reach 5.31%.
