US housing starts increased in November 2009 according to data released by the US Census Bureau on December 16.
In particular, seasonally adjusted starts of new privately-owned housing units registered in November 2009 a monthly increase of 8.9% following a drop of 10.1% in October. On a yearly basis though total US residential starts were still down by 12.4% compared to November 2008.
Trends in US housing starts varied widely across structure types and regions. In particular, starts of single-family units increased by only 2.1% in November 2009 but starts of structures with 5 units or more posted a monthly increase of 62.7%. On a yearly basis, single-family housing starts were up by 5.5% while multi-family housing starts were down by 53.9%.
Regional variations were also wide as the Northeast and South posted double-digit monthly increases in housing starts amounting to 16.4% and 12.3%, respectively, while the Midwest and the West posted small monthly increases of 3.0% and 1.9% respectively.
