States with Lowest Rental Housing Vacancy Rates in Q3 2009

US rental housing vacancy rates ranged widely across states in the third quarter of 2009 according to the latest estimates produced by the US Census Bureau.

According to the results of the Housing Vacancy Survey (HVS) for the third quarter of 2009, the Vermont rental housing market had the lowest vacancy rate of 5.4% among all US states.

Montana and New York posted the second and third lowest vacancy rates of 6.1% and 6.3%, respectively. Massachusetts and North Dakota with estimated rental vacancy rates of 6.4% for both, complete the list of the top five states with the lowest rental housing vacancy rate in the third quarter of 2009.

As the graph below indicates, Wyoming, South Dakota, Utah, Maine and Iowa with rental vacancy rates between 6.6% and 7.6% feature also in the list of the top 10 states with the lowest vacancy rates for rental housing in Q3 2009.

The state with the highest vacancy rate of 18.7% in Q3 2009 was Florida followed by Arizona and Mississippi with vacancy rates of 17.7% and 16.5%, respectively.
