US Mortgage Activity Increased in First Week of December

US mortgage activity, as reflected in mortgage applications, increased 8.5% on a seasonally adjusted basis in the first week of December compared to previous week, according to the results of MBA's Weekly Mortgage Applications Survey for the week ending December 4, 2009.

Refinancing activity registered a larger increase than purchase activity in the first week of December. In particular, the seasonally adjusted Refinance Index increased 11.1% from the previous week while the seasonally adjusted Purchase Index increased 4.0%.

Furthermore, refinancing mortgage activity increased its share in total mortgage applications. In particular, the share of refinancing mortgage activity in total mortgage applications increased to 74.4% from 72.1% the previous week.
