Multifamily Mortgage Originations Posted a Double-Digit Drop in Q3 2009
Multifamily mortgage originations posted a double-digit drop in Q3 2009, according to the results of the latest Mortgage Bankers Association’s (MBA) Quarterly Survey of Commercial/Multifamily Mortgage Bankers Originations.
According to the survey, the total volume of multifamily and mortgage loan originations in Q3 2009 dropped 12% compared to the volume processed in Q2 2009, mostly because Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac pulled back from multifamily lending. This drop follows a 50% quarterly increase in activity in Q2 2009.
On a year-over-year basis, commercial and multifamily mortgage originations in the third quarter of 2009 dropped 54%, which is the same rate of year-over-year decline registered in the second quarter of 2009.
According to the MBA press release, originations of multifamily mortgages in Q3 2009 posted a 17% drop compared to the activity registered in Q2 2009 and a 40% drop compared to the activity registered in Q3 2008.
Note the in Q2 2009 multifamily mortgage originations posted a 74% quarterly increase and a 21% year-over-year decline.
