US employment posted a yearly decrease of 4% in October 2009, according to recently released data by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

According to the data, US employment decreased in all states but the District of Columbia, which posted a minimal year-over-year increase of 0.1%. However, the unemployment rate in this state was up by 4.2 percentage points as it increased to 11.9% in October 2009 from 7.7% in October 2008.
Arizona, Michigan and Nevada registered the largest annual percentage losses among all US states as non-agricultural employment decreased by 6.9%, 6.4% and 6.0%, respectively.
Georgia, Wyoming, Idaho, Oregon and Indiana complete the list of the 8 worst performers on a yearly basis in October 2009, with non-agricultural employment declines ranging between 5.2% and 5.6, respectively.
The three large states of California, New York and Florida posted yearly employment declines of 4.6%, 2.8% and 4.4%, respectively.
The three states that registered the smallest year-over-year employment declines of 1.2%, 0.9%, and 0.3% were Montana, Alaska and North Dakota, respectively.
