US Foreclosures Posted an Annual Increase of Over 20% in Q3 2009

US foreclosures, as measured by foreclosure filings, posted an annual increase of over 20% in Q3 2009, according to the latest data released by RealtyTrac Inc.

In particular, according to the report, foreclosure filings for the third quarter of 2009 increased 5.4% from the previous quarter and 22.5% compared to the third quarter of 2008.

US foreclosures varied across states considerably. In fact some states posted declines in foreclosure activity. Indiana, Delaware, and Washington posted the largest declines in foreclosure activity compared to the second quarter of 2009 (-12.8%, -8.8% and -7.3%, respectively).

Foreclosure activity in Alabama, Rhode Island and New Hampshire declined as well by more than 5% on a quarterly basis. California and Florida registered small quarterly declines of 1.5% and 0.7% in foreclosure activity.

Nevada, Arizona and California posted the highest foreclosure rates in the third quarter of 2009, with one foreclosure filing in every 23, 53 and 53 housing units, respectively.

Utah, Idaho and Florida complete the list of the six states with the highest foreclosure rates in the third quarter of 2009, with one foreclosure filing in every 56-97 housing units.

Vermont, North Dakota and West Virginia posted the lowest foreclosure rates, with one foreclosure filing per 1,549 - 5,023 units.

According to the same report by RealtyTrac Inc, US foreclosures in September 2009, as measured by foreclosure filings, decreased by 4.1% compared to August 2009.
