US Non-Agricultural Employment Decreased in December 2009
US non-agricultural employment decreased in December 2009 according to the latest data released by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).
According to the data released, US non-agricultural employment decreased by 85,000 in December 2009, while the unemployment rate remained at the November level of 10%. In the previous month US non-farm payrolls had registered a minor increase of 4,000.
Almost all of US non-agricultural employment losses, and particularly 81,000, were registered in the goods-producing industries, which include construction and manufacturing. The construction sector registered the largest job losses of 53,000 while 27,000 were lost in the manufacturing sector.
Service producing industries registered job losses of 4,000 on aggregate but there were diverse trends within the sector. In particular, the leisure/hospitality and Government sectors registered job losses of 25,000 and 21,000, respectively, but professional and business services as well as education and health services registered employment gains of 50,000 and 35,000, respectively.
